Battlefield Mobile is a now unreleased multiplayer mobile video game that was in development by Industrial Toys with additional help from DICE and FarBridge Studios, and published by Electronic Arts for iOS and Android, although iOS devices were never selected for the Alpha and Beta playtests.
Development[edit]
Battlefield Mobile was announced in April 22, 2021 on EA Newsletter by Oskar Gabrielson, DICE's general director together with a announcement of Battlefield 2042 (unnamed at that time) in development together with Criterion Games, EA Gothenburg and DICE Los Angeles Studio.[1] With this, Gabrielson also announced that they partnered with Industrial Toys to bring Battlefield experience to mobile devices, with a full release date set for 2022.
The development started in the same month, with Industrial Toys revealing later in July 2021 their partnership with FarBridge as a support studio for the game.[2]
On September 2021, early play-tests were announced for Indonesia and Philippines, featuring a remake of Battlefield 3 map "Grand Bazaar" with Conquest as the only mode available for the test. EA on their forums stated that pre-registers and playtests will start rolling on Asian countries, and as the development continued, more regions would've become available to pre-register and test play. The game was set to include it's own battle passes with optional microtransactions of cosmetic items. The early playtests would've only available on Android devices with Nougat (7.0) or higher. The first playtest was released for Thailand pre-registered users on on September 23, 2021.[3]
A year later, Beta playtests exclusively for Android were released on November 8, 2022 only on Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. EA stated that more countries would be added in later updates, and pushed the full release for 2023.[4]
Cancellation[edit]
After two months of the release of the Open Beta, EA decided to halt the development of Battlefield Mobile along with the discontinuation of the mobile version of Apex Legends on January 31, 2023, citing "strategical decisions" and focusing more on the console and PC experience of Battlefield. The Beta servers will shut down on March 3, 2023, and all purchases and progress by the users will be automatically wiped out without the possibility to get a refund. Industrial Toys was also shut down by EA following the cancellation of the game, and their Twitter account would still posting news and updates until February 3, 2023, when it stopped posting.[5][6] Prior to its cancellation, it was included on Pocket Gamer list of "Best Upcoming Mobile Games in 2023".[7]
