Bavo Defurne
Bavo Defurne (Ghent, 1971) is a Belgian film director from the Flanders Region.
Biography[edit]
Writer-Director Bavo Defurne is known for Souvenir starring Academy Award Nominee Isabelle Huppert and Kévin Azaïs . Together with his longtime creative partner Yves Verbraeken, Defurne also co-wrote the lyrics for the original songs by Pink Martini featured in the film.[1] [2]
The duo encourages their cast and crew to transform the story material into a visually beautiful and expressive tale. Unspoken desires, the human body and nature, almost being a character of it's own merit, play a prominent role in their artistic universe.
Defurne's award-winning debut feature, North Sea Texas was theatrically released in 2012 in among others the USA, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The film won the Silver Zenith on the Montréal International Film Festival end of augustus 2011 as well as the Fipresci international Press Prize.
Defurne first established himself as an exciting new talent with a series of critically acclaimed and award-winning short films, of which Campfire is the best known. The very close artistic collaboration between Defurne and his writer-producer Yves Verbraeken dates back to that period.[3]
His first shortfilm Atlantis dates back to 1990. Afterwards followedRohypnol from 1992, Trailer and Ludodrome in 1993, Particularly Now, in Spring in 1996, Saint in 1997 (also a part of the compilation film Rainbow Stories), Matroos in 1998 en Kampvuur from 2000. The shorts were released on dvd under the title Campfire (Strand Video).
Ludodrome was elected Audience Highlight in Arnhem in 1995,Kampvuur / Campfire was awarded the Film Four Short Film Prize in London at the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival of 2000, the Special Jury Mention at the Torino Lesbian and Gay film Festival in 2000 and the Audience Award at that same festival.
Before, Defurne worked as a decorator for Peter Greenaway and was assistant director to the German media artist Matthias Müller.
Bavo Defurne has made a number of commercials, including the music video for "Anger Never Dies" by popular band Hooverphonic.
He grew up in the Belgian coastal town of Ostend, once home to the painters Ensor and Spilliaert and musician Marvin Gaye. Defurne's father is a sea captain and his mother a biology teacher. [1]
