Beastie Boys Square

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Beastie Boys Square is the name given to the intersection of Ludlow and Rivington streets on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City.[1] The intersection was immortalized when it appeared on the Beastie Boys' 1989 album Paul's Boutique.[2][3]

After a decade of petitioning the community board, on September 8, 2023 the intersection was officially renamed with an event at which both Mike D and Ad-Rock spoke.[2][4]

History

LeRoy McCarthy began to advocate for the intersection of Ludlow and Rivington to be renamed after Adam Yauch's death in 2012.[5] In 2014, Community Board 3 voted 24-1 against the renaming, citing city policy that community involvement with the location needed to be ongoing for at least ten years prior to the application for renaming.[5][3]

In July 2022, the city council approved the renaming of the intersection to Beastie Boys Square.[5] The dedication happened about a month after Hip Hop celebrated its 50th anniversary.[6]
