Beinghunted. is a prominent online magazine that was founded by Jörg Haas in Munich in 2001.[1] The magazine is recognized for its focus on fashion, art, music, and subcultures. It was one of the first media platforms to cover fashion subcultures online, and it has since become a significant source of inspiration for fashion enthusiasts, artists, and designers worldwide.[2]

History[edit]

Jörg Haas started Beinghunted. as a website in 2001. It was first hosted on the server of his web design agency that he had founded in 1998 in Munich. The first post was published in October 2001.[2] Initially, the website followed the structure of a newsfeed, with almost daily postings about fashion, art, music, and culture.

In the following years, Beinghunted. introduced new formats, such as magazine-style interviews and features on brands, artists, and musicians. These included the likes of Peter Sutherland[3], José Parlá, Futura2000[4], James Lavelle[5][6] and Nick Walker[7]. This innovative structure inspired other media outlets such as Highsnobiety, Hypebeast, or Honeyee.com.[8]

In 2004, Beinghunted. published the first-ever feature on the Japanese brand visvim[9], which later became known as one of the most popular and influential brands in the industry. That same year, Haas started an online shop called "The Glade"[10] to provide a platform to sell products from other individuals.

In 2005, Beinghunted. designed an exclusive T-Shirt for US-American streetwear brand Stüssy to honor Stussy's 25th anniversary.[11] The following year, in 2006, Beinghunted. published the first-ever official online feature on New York City-based streetwear brand Supreme.[12] Up until this year, the brand did not have its own website presence.

During its peak, Beinghunted. saw between 10,000 to 15,000 daily visitors.

In 2011, Haas shifted his focus from [the editorial work at] Beinghunted. to its online retail engagement and physical retail space in Berlin named Firmament.[13]

After leaving Firmament in 2015, Jörg Haas rebooted Beinghunted. by launching a multidisciplinary agency, media platform, and brand under the same name.[14] The gallery-style HQ is located in central Berlin. The agency focuses on providing branding, creative, and digital marketing services to clients in the fashion and lifestyle industries.[15]

Beinghunted. GmbH has worked with numerous well-known brands, including W.L. Gore, ON Running, Adidas, and Converse. Its services range from brand strategy and communications to content creation, social media management, and activation campaigns.[16]

In addition to its work with clients, the agency continues to publish online content and released its first print issue in 2017. The print issue features in-depth interviews with various creatives and explores various cultural topics.

Cultural Impact[edit]

Beinghunted. has made a significant cultural impact in the fashion industry. It has been one of the early sources of inspiration for fashion designer and creative director, Virgil Abloh. He has spoken about how important Beinghunted. was to him during his formative years:

„I was reading Beinghunted. Early, formative, important sources.“[17] “The products that I was into that were coming from sites like Beinghunted. … ”[18]

In addition to inspiring designers, Beinghunted. has also contributed to the recognition and growth of various brands. It has showcased emerging labels and helped establish them as significant players in the fashion industry.
