History[edit]

The first records of racing at Bellewstown appeared in 1726 in the Dublin Gazette and the Weekly Courier in 1726. George Tandy, a former Mayor of Drogheda and brother of Napper Tandy, persuaded King George III to sponsor a race, His Majesty's Plate, at Bellewstown in 1780 which was valued at £100[1] and which continued to be run until 1980.[2] The course was originally left-handed until a change in the location of the grandstand prompted a move to right-handed racing. Until 1977 steeplechase races were also held at the course, but now only Flat racing and hurdle races take place.[2]

On 26 June 1975, Bellewstown Racecourse was the site of the Yellow Sam betting coup.

Track features[edit]

Bellewstown is a sharp left-handed oval circuit of 9 furlongs (1 mile, 1 furlong) with a run in of 3 furlongs and an uphill finish. There are 5 hurdles on the circuit.

The pitch of Bellewstown GAA and Bellewstown Pitch & Putt lie within the racecourse.

Meetings[edit]

Bellewstown has two festivals each year; one in the first week of July and the other at the end of August.[1] There are 4 meetings in July and 2 in August. The racecourse lies idle for the rest of the year.
