Ben Aulich

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Benjamin Joseph Aulich (born 20 January 1973) is an Australian criminal defence lawyer.

Career[edit]

Aulich lead a prosecution against then ACT Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold, when Drumgold refused to pay a builder for works done on properties he owned.[1]

In addition to representing the presidents of the Nomads and Rebels bikie groups,[citation needed] Aulich has run a number of high-profile cases, including advocating for family members in the Dreamworld tragedy,[2] representing Charnwood chicken shop killer Rebecca Anne Massey,[3] defending former senior Liberal political staffer Peta Credlin in a drink-driving charge,[4] representing Tara Costigan axe murderer Marcus Rappel[5] and defending Canberra businessman turned international drug smuggler Rohan Arnold.[6]

Arrest[edit]

In May 2020 the Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched a controlled operation against Ben Aulich.[citation needed] An undercover officer posed as a client who ultimately engaged the high-profile criminal lawyer for several months before he was arrested.

The operation led to Aulich being charged with conspiring to launder money and recruiting a person to assist in the process. The most serious conspiracy charge against Aulich was withdrawn soon after it was made.

Aulich vehemently denies what is alleged by the remaining charge and has maintained his plea of not guilty for nearly three years.[7] The police operation has been labelled by Aulich’s defence barrister as ‘the most profound instance of entrapment’[8]

The Office of the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions was headed at the time of Aulich’s arrest by Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold.[9] Aulich managing partner Peter Woodhouse publicly called for the resignation of Drumgold for his role in the failed Bruce Lehrmann rape case.[10]
