Ben Brooks (born March 17, 1962) is an American finance executive and investor. He has been the President of Capital Investment Companies since August 2016.[1]. Prior to this position, Ben served as CEO of Marion Bass Securities Corporation, a company that provided investment banking and financial services to institutions and high net worth clients. Ben Brooks has been acclaimed as an innovator in North Carolina State for his recently create Carolina's Index.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Ben is the son of Ben and Faye Brooks, educators who lived in North Carolina. Ben’s father held a Doctorate in Education and was a School Superintendent for three N.C. counties over a 19 year period. Ben attended Charles E. Jordan High School in Durham, N. C. Ben graduated from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in 1984 and obtained a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Duke University in 1991.

Career[edit]

Brooks began his investment career as an Investment Adviser with WheatFirst Securities in 1990, a company later acquired by Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC[3]. After seven years, Brooks took over as Regional Manager of Marion Bass Securities in 1997. After several successes, Ben was promoted to Senior Vice President and Director of Investment Banking. [4][5] and subsequently to CEO of the firm[5]. During his tenure with Marion Bass Securities, Brooks participated in or led many local underwritings including Syquest, Crescent State Bank and First Carolina Bank. In 2001, Brooks negotiated the sale of Marion Bass Securities to Jospephthal & Co., which is today Oppenheimer & Co.

Building upon this, Brooks founded Southern Capitol Ventures in 2000[6]. The firm became one of the leading venture funds in the United States. The first funded three IPOs which were ChannelAdvisor, SquareOne Bank and Motricity. Subsequently, he funded several companies which later became industry leaders such as WeddingWire, which developed into one of the largest online wedding platforms.

In August 2016, Brooks accepted the role of leading Capital Investment Companies, one of the Independent Broker-Dealers in the Southeast[1]. As President, Brooks has brought many top tier Investment Professionals to the company and Capital Investment Companies has become known as an industry leader across the country[7]

In 2017, Brooks created the Carolina's Index, a proxy for public company performance in North and South Carolina. Carolina's Index is now tracked by analysts and investors alike. The index tracks the performance of the 75 largest companies in NC and SC on an equal-weighted basis[2]. The index is particularly important in North Carolina given its rich banking history and rapid growth in Technology and Life Sciences.

Ben assumed the role of President of Capital Investment Companies August 1, 2016[1]. The company was formed in 1984 and was at an inflection point due to shrinking industry margins. Ben attracted great people and utilized technological innovations to significantly grow revenue, build a strong brand through the creation of Carolina's Index and enabled Capital to become recognized as a premier investment firm in the Southeastern United States[2]. Capital Investment Companies has been recognized as a Best Employer in North Carolina by Business North Carolina each year under Ben's guidance. Pension and Investment Magazine has also recognized Capital Investment Companies as a Best Place to Work in Money Management in 2017 and 2018. Capital is now one of the fastest-growing Independent Broker-Dealers in the United States.
