Ben Carter (born 22 August 1981) is an English musician, best known as the drummer and a founding member of the thrash metal band Evile. He has been the only continuous member of the band since its formation and is recognised for his precise yet aggressive drumming style. In addition to his work with Evile, Carter has performed with a number of local bands as a singer, guitarist, and bassist.

Early life

Carter grew up in Honley, West Yorkshire. Both of his parents were musicians, and he began playing alongside his father at around ten years old. At that age he was already experimenting with drumming on makeshift items such as a bucket and a Lego box, before receiving his first drum kit at around fourteen. He is largely self-taught, gaining experience by playing in various bands while at school and college.[1]

Career

Evile

Before becoming Evile, Carter and guitarist Matt Drake performed together in a Metallica tribute band called Metal Militia. Alongside Ol Drake and Mike Alexander, they transitioned from covers to original material, officially forming Evile in 2004.[2][circular reference]

The band’s debut album, Enter the Grave (2007), was released by Earache Records and positioned Evile as part of the mid-2000s thrash revival in the UK. Subsequent albums such as Infected Nations (2009), Five Serpents’ Teeth (2011), and Skull (2013) further developed their sound. After a short hiatus, the band returned with Hell Unleashed (2021) and The Unknown (2023) on Napalm Records, with Carter continuing to anchor their style through his fast, aggressive yet controlled drumming.[3][circular reference]

Style and influences

Carter is known for combining aggression with precision, using fast double-bass techniques and strong rhythmic drive while also shifting into slower, groove-oriented passages when required. His playing has been described as both powerful and thoughtful.[4] He cites influences from thrash and extreme metal drummers, including the styles of Slayer, Exodus, Sepultura, and Metallica.

Other musical projects

In addition to his role in Evile, Carter has played in several local bands in West Yorkshire, taking on roles as a singer, guitarist, and bassist. This reflects his broader musicianship beyond drums.

Equipment

Carter has been an endorsee of Paiste cymbals since 2009. His live setup has included instruments such as:

  • 14" RUDE Blast China
  • 14" Color Sound 900 Hi-Hat
  • 19" 900 Series Crash
  • 20" RUDE Mega Bell Ride
  • 2002 Series China cymbals[5]

Personal life

Outside music, Carter is a fan of retro video games, 1980s cartoons, and mixed martial arts (MMA/UFC).[6]
