Ben Orpwood

Ben Orpwood is a British Chef who has travelled the globe cooking both on television and in restaurants, becoming a world class chef and executive of many new and existing restaurants worldwide in his 20 plus years in the industry. [1]. After learning and fining his craft in Cambridge, Orpwood travelled the world, primarily cooking in Australia and South East Asia on television, specialising in Asian cuisine and innovating in gourmet Asian food.

Education

Orpwood was born in Cambridge, UK, and after being an unruly schoolchild, he took up cooking in Cambridge to gain a sense of discipline and structure, completing his studies for cooking there. Orpwood began his career through an apprenticeship at Queens College, Cambridge[2], under the tutlage of Hans Schweitzer.

Career

A major breakthrough came for Orpwood when he joined the London branch of the restaurantZuma, as a station chef in 2005. After initial success Orpwood became involved in Zuma's launch in Dubai and Istanbul, before a major stint in Sydney working in various kitchen and honing his craft, becoming a well reknowned chef. Orpwood was lured back to London to work in Sexy Fish before landing the job as executive chef of the newly opened Issho, a Japanese restaurant, where his specialty lies. In 2018 Ben was approached by Gordon Ramsay to fill the same job for his restaurant Maze, and later the asian inspired Lucky Cat when it replaced Maze. After this stint Orpwood would join newly opened NIJU London, [3] a produce based restaurant, in the same role of executive chef in 2023, where he works currently. Orpwood has over 20 years of experience as a chef in British restaurants as well as Zuma overseas. He specialises in Asian cuisine and he describes his work as "Asian Influence" and he pushes the boundaries of dishes from the region with new innovation.

Great British Menu Appearance

Ben Orpwood was invited to compete as one of 32 chefs on series 17 of Great British Menu, aired on BBC Orpwood was drawn as one of 4 chefs in the Central heat, comprised of chefs from Central London. [4] Orpwood was one of the top two competitors in the heat, advancing past the fish course to face the judges. Despite being neck and neck with rival Sally Abe on points, Abe was deemed the most consistent competitor and hence won a place in the finals, leaving Orpwood as the runner up.
