Benjamin O'Brien
Benjamin O'Brien (born February 4, 1973) is an Anesthesiologist, Intensive Care Physician and Professor of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine. He holds Irish, German and British citizenship. He is the Director of the Departments of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the German Heart Center Berlin (DHZB) and at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He has also been appointed as Chair (Charité-Ordinarius) for Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine.
Education and Career
O'Brien completed his medical and academic training at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, the Leopold-Franzens-University in Innsbruck, the University of California San Francisco and the Free University Berlin. He was awarded his M.D. from the Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, Berkeley, USA.[1] O’Brien completed residency training in anesthesia and intensive care medicine in London and Sydney. He has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) since 2005 and a Fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) since 2010.
In 2012, O'Brien earned a Master of Health Business Administration (MHBA) degree from the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg. He obtained his ‘Habilitation’ and ‘venia legendi’ at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin in 2013.
O'Brien was appointed as Clinical Director of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at two London hospitals, St Bartholomew's Hospital and London Chest Hospital, in 2013. He was instrumental in the merger of these two hospitals and the National Heart Hospital to form the amalgamated Barts Heart Centre. This 300 bed facility in central London opened in 2015 and cares for 16,000 inpatient treatments per year making it one of the largest cardiovascular centers in Europe.[2]
With the establishment of the Barts Heart Centre, O'Brien was appointed as Director of Perioperative Medicine, and additionally as Deputy Director in 2019. In 2018 he was appointed Professor of Perioperative Medicine at the William Harvey Research Institute in London.[3]
During the 1st wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, O'Brien was instrumental in the development of the Nightingale Hospital in London as Clinical and Divisional Director. This was an emergency intensive care unit constructed in 9 days in a convention centre in East London to create extra capacity for COVID-19 patients.[4]
On November 1, 2020, he was appointed as Director of the Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the German Heart Center Berlin (DHZB). As a joint appointment, he accepted a Chair in Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He is also the founding Director of the new Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin,[5] established in January 2021.
Research
O'Brien's research focuses on cardiovascular perioperative medicine, with an emphasis on patient outcome based research. His research groups and collaborations in London, Oxford, Boston and Berlin focus on the prevention and treatment of heart rhythm problems following cardiac surgery. He is considered an expert in the field of Atrial Fibrillation after Cardiac Surgery (AFACS)' and has authored international guidelines,[6][7] led randomized trials,[8][9] and coordinated data-science projects using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques.[10] O'Brien also collaborates with translational scientists to bring laboratory-based research to the bedside.
O'Brien serves on the editorial board of the 'Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia'[11] and provides peer reviews for several other professional journals, funding bodies and appointment committees.
Fellowships and Awards
O'Brien is a member of national and international professional societies in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany, including the Royal Society of Medicine. O'Brien has received national recognition for his work through a National Clinical Excellence Award in 2018.[12]

Aviation
O'Brien is a keen pilot. He has been flying gliders since the age of 14, and earned his Private Pilots License for single engine aircraft at the age of 18. In 2003, he completed his Commercial Pilot Training and holds both a Commercial Pilot License / Airline Transport Pilot License and type ratings on turbine aircraft.
