Bernardo Cueto (San Francisco, (b. 1984) is an American lawyer. He is best known for his lawsuits against La Crosse, WI and Madison, WI. Cueto handles criminal and landlord/tenant cases.

Life[edit]

Bernardo Cueto was born in San Francisco in 1984 to Manuel Hinojosa and Adriana Cueto. Cueto attended Dana College and graduated in 2006. That same year, he married Heather Cueto and went to law school in North Dakota. He graduated law school in 2009. He lives in Onalaska, WI. In 2011, he obtained his M.B.A. from Marylhurst University. He has 7 children.

He is a former chairperson of the Civil Rights and Liberties Section of the Wisconsin State Bar.

Career[edit]

In 2014, he along with the Thomas More Law Center, sued the Town of Campbell on behalf of protesters. One of those protestors was cited for just having an American flag. He ended up winning a partial decision in the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago, Illinois..[1]. The Chief of Police ended up receiving a criminal charge for retaliating against the lawsuit. Bernardo Cueto lent his experience and expertise in assisting in an amicus brief on behalf of Professor John McAdams who was fired for exercising his freedom of speech at Marquette University. Professor McAdams won in the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2018. [3].

Bernardo Cueto was also one of several attorneys who sued the City of Madison when it decided to shut down the private schools in the city. He prevailed in the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2020.[4]

In 2018, Cueto was able to secure a dismissal in a high profile and unpopular case defending someone wrongfully accused of being involved in child sex trafficking. [5]. He currently serves on the board of the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Bernardo Cueto sued the City of La Crosse, WI on behalf of 52 landlords because of illegal practices of the city. The Court of Appeals sided with Cueto in 2015. [6]. He has won similar lawsuits against the City of Beloit, WI [7]. and the City of Wausau, WI [8].

Bernardo Cueto is a lifetime charter member of the Best Attorneys of America. [9]
