Bert L. Stevens

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bert L. Stevens was an actor who appeared in a variety of movies in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.

Background

Bert L. Stevens was born Malcolm Byron Stevens on February 26, 1905 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He was one of five children. His younger sister by three years – Ruby Stevens – was better known as Barbara Stanwyck. Stevens married Caryl Lincoln and together they had a son, Brian Stevens. He died on December 14, 1964 in Hollywood, California.[1]

When Bert was six years old, his mother cracked her skull open on a kerbstone when she tripped while stepping out of a Brooklyn streetcar. Following her death, Bert’s father abandoned him and his sister Ruby, having been offered a job with a construction team digging the Panama canal. None of the kids ever saw him again. While the older siblings (all girls) were able to look after themselves, this wasn’t the case for Bert or Ruby who both found themselves living in an array of different homes, sometimes together, other times not. When Ruby escaped from one of these homes, Bert would usually find her at the old tenement in Brooklyn. As a result of these shared experiences, the two became very close, Bert being Ruby’s protector.

Bert had a quiet personality. He seemed to lack ambition. He followed his sister Ruby out west and when she began working in movies, he copied that too. When she put her new name in lights, Bert changed his name as well.

In 1959 Bert survived his first heart attack. Five years later, he didn’t. He was 60 when he passed away in 1964.

Bert and Ruby

Bert and Ruby starred in two films together: No Man of Her Own and The File on Thelma Jordan. Of the two, Ruby for sure was the more famous.[2]
