BetMGM is an American global sports betting and casino company and joint venture between MGM Resorts International and GVC Holdings. It is the exclusive sports betting division of MGM, both online and in MGM casinos across the United States. BetMGM also owns side sister brands Borgata Online (New Jersey), Party Casino, and Party Poker. With a portfolio of MGM-owned casinos across Nevada, New Jersey, Colorado, Indiana, West Virginia, and Tennessee, as well as a partnership with Boyd Gaming, BetMGM has exclusive access to all US land-based and online sports betting, real money and free-to-play online casino gaming, major tournament and online poker in 15 US state markets, with a combined population of 90 million people.[1]

The venture was first named Roar Digital upon its founding in July 2018. On October 23, 2018, Adam Greenblatt was named the venture's first CEO. The app was first only available in Nevada and New Jersey, but, over time, expanded to multiple states, the most recent of which was Tennessee, which began operations on November 1, 2020.[2]

History[edit]

Following the U.S. Supreme Court's May 2018 ruling that struck down the PASPA sports betting ban, in July 2018, MGM announced a 50/50 joint venture with UK gambling operator GVC Holdings to create a sports betting and online gaming platform targeting the U.S. market in states where such activities are legal.[3] In January 2019, the joint venture was named Roar Digital.[4] Additionally with the move into sports betting MGM announced official partnerships with several North American professional sports leagues, including the National Basketball Association,[5] the National Hockey League,[6] and Major League Baseball.[7] In March 2019, MGM announced an official gaming partnership with Major League Soccer.[8] In September of the same year, the company announced a partnership with sports bar chain restaurant Buffalo Wild Wings. The partnership will involve Buffalo Wild Wings sports bars across the country showcasing custom sportsbook content on TV screens inside the bars, featuring live odds provided by BetMGM, as well as the establishment of three new Buffalo Wild Wings sports bars within MGM properties or in partnership with BetMGM as additional states come online. The first is expected to open in mid-2020 inside Mandalay Bay, which is adjacent to the site of Allegiant Stadium.[9]

It is still in September 2019 that the company's main product, until then called PlayMGM, was renamed with the current name BetMGM.

At the end of October 2019, the company established a betting partnership with Yahoo Sports to connect its sports betting online platform to the popular sports website.[10]

In addition to the company's partnerships with sports leagues, on July 9, 2020, BetMGM announced an exclusive betting partnership with the Denver Broncos of the National Football League.[11] BetMGM would follow this deal with multiple betting partnerships with other NFL teams, including the Detroit Lions,[12] Las Vegas Raiders,[13] and Tennessee Titans.[14] On November 24, 2020, BetMGM and the Pittsburgh Steelers announced a partnership in anticipation of the company's upcoming expansion into Pennsylvania in December, pending regulatory approval.[15]

On September 22, 2020, BetMGM launched its first national advertising campaign featuring Academy Award-winning and Grammy Award-winning actor/singer Jamie Foxx, titled "The King of Sportsbooks". The campaign was made in partnership with creative agency 72andSunny.[16] The advertisement also marked the joint venture's official transition from Roar Digital to BetMGM.

Products[edit]
