Better Dwelling is a Canadian media company,[1] that focuses on data-driven journalism. The company operates the largest independent housing news site in Canada, and focuses on Toronto and Vancouver.[2]

Background[edit]

The company was founded in 2016[3] by Stephen Punwasi,[4] and began with housing coverage of Toronto. Later expansion added coverage of Vancouver, and Calgary.

The company syndicates content through several larger outlets. In June 2016, they began to distribute content through the Huffington Post Canada.[5] In September 2016 they began syndication in the United States with a partnership with Business Insider.[6]

The company's analysis and works have been featured in The Guardian,[7] Vice,[8] The Australian,[9] The Tyee,[10] and The Vancouver Sun.[11]

Controversy[edit]

Affordability[edit]

Housing affordability is a regularly covered topic. Data journalists from the company maintain that household wages in Canada do not statistically support the price of housing in the country.[10]

Analysts from the company also maintain that millennial employment trends will crash the Canadian economy.[12]

China[edit]

Coverage of the disbanded CSIS report Sidewinder resulted in Taiwanese media accusing China of meddling with Canadian real estate markets.[13][14]

The company covered a controversial marketing technique in Vancouver, where actors pretend to be mainland Chinese buyers to stimulate demand. This piece was picked up by China's state media, and further alleged that Canadian marketers were using the fear of Chinese buyers to incite FOMO.[15]
