Stephen Punwasi is a Canadian journalist and prominent financial analyst.[1] He is best known for being the co-founder of Better Dwelling and playing a role in exposing the extent of money laundering in Canada.[2] Thomson Reuters has named him one of the top influencers in finance and risk.[3] In September, he announced he would be seeking office in the 2022 Toronto mayoral election.[4]
Early career[edit]
Stephen Punwasi previously worked as a mass market apparel designer.[5] He later founded the children’s education app Perchbox, to address the gap between US state curriculum and Common Core education standards.[6]
Journalism and Academic Research[edit]
Housing
Punwasi is the co-founder of Canada’s largest independent real estate news service, Better Dwelling.[7] The Globe and Mail called his housing insights a “must read,"[8] and is known for applying behavioral finance theory to housing.[9]
Global Capital Flows and Asset Bubbles
His research on the relationship between capital flows and asset bubbles has been the subject of several academic works. In particular, the relationship between foreign capital and CDOs prior to the Great Recession, and the subsequent flow directly into housing in the current global housing bubble.[10]
Capital controls and inefficient allocation of capital is a frequent subject of his works. He argues it doesn’t keep Capital in, but forces it to find an inefficient but effective way to move it out.[11] One method is laundering money through real estate, which had been the subject of the evidence provided at the public inquiry.[12]
Anti-Money Laundering
Punwasi made notable contributions to revealing the extent of Canada’s money laundering problem. His research is thanked in the Government of British Columbia Dirty Money (report), a precursor to the Cullen Commission, a public inquiry into money laundering.[13] The inquiry was also presented a separate report from Punwasi explaining the impact of money laundering on residential real estate prices.[12]
He is also known for working with Transparency International Canada to reveal that billions in funds are laundered through Canadian real estate annually.[14]
Canadian Inflation
In March 2022, Punwasi was called before Canadian Parliament’s finance committee as an expert to testify on the causes of elevated inflation.[15]
