Bettina Lange is a Professor of Law and Regulation in the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford.[1] Her research focuses on EU, UK and German environmental regulation[2] using socio-legal methods.[3]
Research[edit]
Lange is a sustainability law expert whose research focuses on the governance of water resources, which are increasingly scarce due to global warming.[4] She made the socio-legal contribution to MaRIUS, a large interdisciplinary research program funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council.[5] It examines the management of the risks, impacts, and uncertainties associated with water scarcity and drought in the United Kingdom. [6] She also authored policy frameworks like ‘Guidelines for Integrated Drought Management’.[7]
Methodologically, Lange works with qualitative empirical data that is analysed using a grounded theory approach or discourse analysis.[8]
Lange developed a collaboration between the Faculty of Law at Oxford and Humboldt University of Berlin on the regulation of uncertain futures and the application of sociological approaches to law and regulation.[9]

Lange holds a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Sociology from Warwick University, a Master of Arts from the University of Oxford and a Doctor of Philosophy in Law from the University of Warwick.
Awards[edit]
- In 2023 Lange won the Teaching Excellence Award for Excellence in Supervision from the Social Sciences Division of the University of Oxford.[10]
- In 2014 she jointly won the Journal of Environmental Law Richard Macrory best article prize for her article with Mark Shepheard 'Changing conceptions of rights to water?'[11]
