Beximco Power Company Limited, with its parent company Beximco Group,[1] developed the largest solar power plant in Bangladesh through its subsidiary, Teesta Solar Ltd. It is developing another one through its subsidiary Korotoa Solar Limited.[2] The first plant, already in operation, is located in Sundarganj, Gaibandha. In 2017 Beximco Power Company Limited signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the Bangladesh Power Development Board for selling electricity, produced from Teesta Solar plant for next 20 years.[3]

Construction of the Teesta Solar plant started in 2017.[1] At the initial stage, 5,50,000 solar panels were installed. In November 2022, the plant started supplying between 90-140 megawatt of electricity on a trial basis to the Rangpur grid substation.[5] In January 2023, the plant was commissioned.[6] In August 2023, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the solar power plant title from a gathering at Rangpur Zila School ground.[7]

Capacity[edit]

The 200 megawatt plant is due to play a significant role in lightning up the northern region of Bangladesh including Gaibandha district.[1] The Teesta Solar plant is connected to the national grid at Rangpur substation. The company built a 35.35km long transmission line to connect the plant with national grid. The electricity produced from the plant is expected to light more than 200,000 homes in the region.[8] The company launched sharia-compliant bonds to finance this project. According to the chairman of Beximco Power Company Limited, Shayan F Rahman, the Teesta Solar plant is a US$300 million worth project.[9]

Teesta Solar Limited, the country's largest solar power plant, has been inaugurated. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated this 200 megawatt power plant built by Beximco Power.[10]

Future development[edit]

Beximco Power Company Limited is developing its second solar plant with through its subsidiary Korotoa Solar Limited at Tetulia upazila in Panchagarh. The plant is scheduled be completed by the end of 2023. It has a 30 megawatt capacity.
