BhaatBank (বাংলা: ভাতব্যাংক) is a nonprofit food bank established in May 2017 and based in Bangladesh.[1] Bhaatbank operates with the help of its employees and work towards the betterment of people living below the poverty line. Bhaatbank currently has food drives providing more than 1200 meals a month and also distributes donated clothes and toys to those in need. Every Friday, BhaatBank provides 400+ meals to those who are not able to afford it, free of charge. BhaatBank provides more than 100 meals in the other days, excluding Monday.[2] BhaatBank is run completely off of donations, and the organization has had more than 1500 volunteers that help cook and distribute food and clothing and always has at least 100 active volunteers.[3]

History[edit]

On May 12, three friends decided to open a food bank and give out food to people from the side of the road in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.[4] With no funding or volunteers, the three continued to give whatever they could, sometimes store bought, and sometimes homemade. As time went on, more and more people saw what they were doing and joined. With the help of social media, the word spread, and two years later, they were able to establish a 501(c) organization. The current BhaatBank managing board members are:

  • Hasnain Syed: CEO, based in Atlanta, Georgia
  • Mohammad Hassan: Director of operations, based in Dhaka
  • Wahid Zaman: Director of public relations, based in Dhaka
  • Sarah Beg: Executive director, based in Dallas, Texas

Activities[edit]

Food[edit]

With the help of Donations and Volunteers, BhaatBank prepares 400 meals every Friday and distributes to the less fortunate at their Donation center in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Their first donation center was opened on May 12, 2017 and BhaatBank has been serving more than 1200 meals to our less fortunate neighbors monthly since then.

BhaatBank's goals include opening locations in different parts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Locations will be open 7 days a week in order to ensure that no one will sleep with an empty stomach.

Clothing[edit]

BhaatBank also accept donations of used clothes and toys and distribute to the people that come to collect food at our donation centers[5]. Anyone can drop off their used clothes at the donation center or contact BhaatBank for a pick up from their preferred location.
