Plot

Shankar is a Bhasmya who belongs to an exorcist cult and has four kids, the eldest one being Durga who has just reached her adolescence. His cult has very rigid and archaic rules which prohibit many things, especially escaping from his trade. His cult is supposed to turn ghostly spirits to ashes and hence is known as Bhasmya. As per the rules of the cult, he cannot earn his living from any other trade and has to depend only on alms, also he cannot teach his kids anything other than exorcism. He leads a nomadic life and has no permanent dwelling and is so poor that there is a daily struggle to get two square meals for his family. He arrives at a new village and makes a large banyan tree, outside the village, his abode, which is next to the graveyard.

He visits the village to take stock of the situation. There is no doctor in the village and a quack, Bhagat, takes advantage of the situation by performing irrelevant rituals. Shankar and his family know that there is no such thing as a ghost and neither can he cure anyone supposedly affected by ghostly spirits, and his entire cult does the same. Shankar resorts only to tricking people to make-believe that he is an exorcist, yet he is kind and honest at heart. Shankar hates this condemned life and yearns to give a better future for his children, but this would neither be accepted by his cult nor the villagers.

Shankar decides to earn the goodwill of the villagers and starts treating people with his rituals which bear fruit, as well as performing exorcism tricks with the help of his wife and kids. There is a section of the village which has sympathy for him, while a section is scared of his exorcism, and there is a small group of youngsters who are angry at him as they feel that exorcism would only bring misfortune to the village. In a string of events, the Sarpanch (village head) becomes a supporter of Shankar after he is cured of illness.

Later, elders from his cult visit and get their share of the money earned by Shankar; they also ask him to arrange for a sacrifice of a buffalo and a feast for the members of his cult, and to marry off Durga, who is still a minor. Shankar agrees to all demands as the consequences of rejecting are very severe. He then attends a Kirtan (poetic recitation of wisdom written by saints) and is deeply touched by the words. He is deeply consumed by the thought that he is not honest with himself and is fooling people with exorcism tricks.

Shankar, with his goodwill woven in the village, manages to get his kids to school after a heated debate amongst the villagers. When the elders learn of this, they question him, but Shankar counter questions the sanctity of their cult. This angers them and they thrash him and his kids; he receives further thrashing from angry youth, but his supporters intervene and save him. Finally, Shankar is able to come out of his condemned life.
