Synopsis
The play is focused on Bideshi, who is an unemployed person in the village, and goes to Kolkata in search of work. His wife doesn't want him to go there, but he still goes and marries a prostitute and starts living with his second wife and two children in Kolkata. On the other hand, his wife waits for him in the village. When Bideshi's wife comes to know that Batohi is going to Kolkata, she asks him to bring her husband back. Meanwhile, Batohi, on the behest of the first wife, reaches Calcutta and is shocked to find the truth. The hero returns to the village, but one day the second wife, labelled as the ‘mistress’, arrives in the village along with her children.[1]
Social message
In this play, through the innocent and sincere character of Sundari, Thakur has drawn attention to the helpless positions of such women who are financially dependent on men and therefore outside the domain of decision making. Also, these women are forced to part with their husbands so that the solitude and depression resulting from this separation become the reality they live with every day. Further, in the absence of their life partners, and in moments of sexual desire, the men find options of engaging in relations with other women.
Bidesia draws attention to the problem of migration and its effects on the women who are left behind.[2]
Popularity
This play was so popular that it was played and is being played very frequently. It gained popularity in those countries where Bhojpuri people live, like Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname etc. In 1963, this play was also filmed as a Bhojpuri movie named "Bidesiya" which was directed by SN Tripathi.[1]
