Bienvenido Bones Banez, Jr. (born 1962 in Davo City, Philippines) - is a visionary painter.
Education[edit]
He studied at the Learning Center of the Arts (now Ford Academy of the Arts) in that city, where one of his tutors was Victorio Edades, Jr.
Career[edit]
In 2002 he won the Asian Fellowship Painting Competition of the Vermont Studio Center in Vermont, USA. In 2004, Bañez went to New York where he now lives. In 2010, he was included in Lexikon der phantastischen Künstler[1] Encyclopedia of Fantastic & Surrealistic & Symbolist & Visionary Artists. pp. 47–48. ISBN 3837084272 Search this book on ...
He is a Board Member of the Williamsburg Circle of International Arts and Letters with several noted Scholars, artists and performers including Robert J. Wickenheiser, Terrance Lindall and Peter Dizozza.[2]
Between 2009 and 2014 several Bañez drawings and paintings were acquired for the Robert J. Wickenheiser for his John Milton collection [3] at the University of South Carolina. Bañez has many works in the Yuko Nii Foundation Collection which is located in the Kings County Savings Bank's landmark building.
In 2017 a Bañez portrait of John Milton was added to the Milton's Cottage collection (see photo of him with Milton Cottage's board member John Dugdale Bradley – right), and he was named to the editorial board of Emanations, a print anthology of poetry, fiction and essay published by International Authors[4]. Among board members is Michael Moorcock.
Banez has exhibited in many shows at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, also at the Society for Art of the Imagination, and many other venues. He also performs extempore on piano.
He exhibited art in a show called "Visionaries" at Queensborough Community College[5] with artists including Isaac Abrams, Miguel Tio, and H.R. Giger. Giger’s work can be seen in the 1979 film “Alien” for which he was awarded an Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
Themes[edit]
Following the model of his colleague and sometime collaborator Terrance Lindall, Bañez has devoted considerable energies to projects inspired by poet John Milton. Bañez’s method is hermeneutical technique. The theme in Bañez’s work is his protean notion of “Surrealmageddon”. A fusion of early-20th Century Surrealistic theorizing, satire, faux-occult posturing, Blakean readings of John Milton, Terrance Lindall’s outspoken criticism of the politics of the contemporary art “scene”, and apocalyptic Jewish and Christian eschatology, the concept of “Surrealmageddon” lends hermeneutic coherence to the dynamic and unsettling figures that populate Bañez’s canvases. Obscure, ironic, and horrific, the notion of Surrealmageddon underscores a manifold vision of globalism, contemporary fascism, ecological devastation, cultural decline, and provocative species of existential and theological skepticism[6]. Drawing unevenly on Bañez’s concept, the collaborative Introduction appearing in the third volume of International Authors’ arts anthology, Emanations: Third Eye amply dilates on the idea to remarkable (and humorous) effect.
