Big Nate Flips Out is a realistic fiction novel by American cartoonist Lincoln Peirce, based on the Big Nate comic strip. It is the fifth book in the Big Nate series, followed by Big Nate in the Zone, and was released on February 5, 2013. It is aimed at children aged 8 to 12. It was published by HarperCollins Publishers.

Plot[edit]

The story begins with Francis criticizing Nate's sloppiness. Then, Nate and his friends go to the first yearbook meeting. While they are walking there, they talk about the previous yearbook editor, Nick Blonsky, who had made lots of screw-ups in last year's yearbook. Nate and his buddies are horrified to see that Nate's nemesis, Gina, is the editor this year. Nate thinks about the horrifying things he thinks Gina would do. Nate then wants FRANCIS to become the editor. A fight is about to rumble when Ms. Hickson comes and makes Francis a CO-editor. Nate also contributes to the yearbook thing by using Mrs. Godfrey's camera to get really funny candids. However, when Nate, Francis, and Teddy are out there, Randy and his posse take the camera and fling it up into the air. The book switches to an Ultra-Nate comic. Nate's dad reads the comic and asks stuff about it, and then what REALLY happened. It turns out Nate was caught by Kim Cressly, and Nick Blonsky caught the camera.

Reception[edit]

Commonsensemedia rated the book at three out of five stars, writing "Nate cleans up his act to save a friendship in funny read."[1] The Concord Monitor gave a favorable review and commented that "As usual, and in keeping with the genre, it has an edgy tone and some irreverent observations that some adults will take exception to. Sloppiness may be a hidden virtue, but a fresh mouth is harder to defend."[2] The Portland Book Review found it "delivers enough potty humor to keep a third or fourth grade reader entranced. With more pictures than text, this volume will give kids confidence to read a bigger book.".[3]
