Tghariba Al-Abdi’s (Known as “Son of Al-Hamriya”),(Arabic: تغريبة العبيدي ، المشهورة بولد الحمرية), is a novel by the Moroccan novelist Abd al-Rahim Lahbibi this is the third novel he wrote. The novel was published for the first time in 2013 by Dar Africa Al-Sharq in Casablanca. It was shortlisted for the 2014 International Prize[1] for Arabic Fiction, known as the Arab Booker Prize.[2]

Description[edit]

Abd al-Rahim’s relies on a traditional narrative ploy, which is that a researcher, who is here the voice of the novelist, finds a manuscript and seeks to achieve it so that it becomes a university thesis with the help of a specialist. That manuscript is the “Al-Abdi’s Tghariba” to which the novel refers in the title, and it is a manuscript that appears to narrate a journey in search of sources of knowledge undertaken by al-Abdi, in relation to the Abda region, from Morocco to Al-Hijaz, bringing back the journeys of many Moroccan scholars such as Ibn Khaldun. But the trip turns into an analysis of the backward reality of Arabs and Muslims, and Al-Abdi's emphasis on the need to take advantage of Europe to overcome that backwardness. This means that the story is divided into two parts, in each section a journey, the journey of the narrator or narrator to achieve the manuscript, and the journey of “Abdi” to learn. The ending remains open at the end of the novel, where we see "Al-Abdi" as a patient looking forward to recovery.[3]

Structure[edit]

The novel is divided into eleven chapters.[4]

  • Chapter One, "From the womb of the mother's tale", written as in the story teller, the Masviwi researcher.
  • Ten chapters that list the manuscript, and each chapter includes parts entitled: Return, Tatmeem, Reminder, Return... in a way that simulates the writing style of the Travel literature manuscripts, which is not linear on the chronological level. The ten chapters are:
  • Exit book (Original title: Kitab Al-Khuruj)
  • Book of gold (Original title: Kitab Al-Dhahab)
  • The Book of the First Jahiliyyah (Original title: Kitab Al-Jahlya Al-‘aulaa)
  • The Book of Magic (Original title: Kitab  Al-Sahar)
  • The Book of Religion and Authority (Original title: Kitab Al-Diyn Wasultan)
  • The Book of Paradise Lost (Original title: Kitab Al-firdaws almafqud)
  • The Book of Quraish (Original title: Kitab Quraysh)
  • Al-Azhar Book: Enter Egypt safely (Original title: Kitab Al’azhar: adkhaluu misr amnen)
  • The Karnitina book (Original title: Kitab Al-karintina)
  • The Book of Fragments (Original title: Kitab Al-shadharat)

Marginal notes[edit]

There are two types of marginal notes in the novel:

  • Explanatory margins for Moroccan terms, colloquial or Berber, or concepts related to the nineteenth century of Morocco. The commentaries are backed by passages from the books of historians and sociologists, especially when it comes to social phenomena or historical events important to understanding the context of the manuscript's contents.
  • Margins of an investigation, some comments by narrator, on the events of the Abdi text and provide possible interpretations and interpretations of the events or speculations about the missing parts in the story.

Character[edit]

  • Narrator: He is a researcher who accidentally finds an old manuscript in one of Asafi's notebooks, the Al-Afaret market, with a used book seller. Then he gets involved in studying it and engages in a battle to achieve it academically and prepare a university thesis at the University of Rabat, but he fails to convince the academics to work, to decide to investigate and study it. Individually.
  • Al-Abdi: The person who wrote the manuscript, whose origins go back to the Abda region, and who grew up between the metropolis of Asafi and the Bani Ahmar region of Abda. He has no specific name and refers to himself in relation to his region: Al-Abdi (relating to Abda) and Walad Al-Hamriyah (relating to Bani Ahmar). He is a young student at the University of Al-Qarawiyyin, who lives in constant internal labor by asking continuous philosophical, social and political questions about the transformations that Morocco was going through. Was dreaming of it). Al-Abdi’s journey will take him, through a path governed by chance and fate, from Fez to the Hejaz, passing through the desert, Sudan and Egypt.
