Big Olaf Creamery is a Florida-based ice cream chain founded in 1982 by Dennis Yoder.[1] In 2022, the company became notable for its Listeria outbreak.[2][3]

History[edit]

The first location was located in Siesta Village off the coast of Sarasota, Florida. Big Olaf was founded by Dennis Yoder, who also served as the chief ice cream maker.

In 2003, Tom Peachy joined Big Olaf and now serves as president of the company.

Big Olaf Creamery of Sarasota has multiple store locations in Florida and sells to retailers across the state. The brand also has one location in Ohio.[4]

2022 Listeria Outbreak[edit]

On July 1, 2022, the CDC issued a food safety alert urging to stop eating and dispose of Big Olaf ice cream. Details of the investigation explained that 22 people had been hospitalized and 1 person had died. At the time, 17 of those patients had been interviewed by the CDC, six of whom claimed they had recently eaten Big Olaf branded ice cream, or they ate ice cream from a location that might be supplied by the creamery.[5] Cases were reported in Florida, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.[6][7][8][9][10][11]

On July 16, 2022, the FDA reported Big Olaf was recalling all of its ice cream flavors, weeks after the beginning of the Listeria probe.[12] Two Big Olaf stores were rebranded as “Blue Pineapple” following the recall and serving different ice cream. The company is facing lawsuits as a result of the outbreak. A Massachusetts couple filed a lawsuit after suffering a miscarriage linked to the outbreak. [13]
