Beyond Better Foods is an American brand of consumer packaged goods company and brand[1][2][3] whose primary products are sold in the United States and are marketed as a lower-calorie, healthier alternatives[4][5][6][7][8][9][10], to typical desserts like ice cream and snacks[11].[12][13][14][15][16]

History[edit]

The company's brand was founded around 2012 by former personal trainer[17][18][19][20] Michael Shoretz. Shoretz, a graduate of Brandeis University, had begun making ice cream in 2010. After finalizing a formula with the help of Tammy Shaw, a factory owner, product developer for companies such as Nestle, Shoretz initially invested $80,000 of his own funds until he received seed investment from Alex Soros (the son of George Soros) and five other investors.[21]

Annual sales hit $1 million in 2013 and more than $4 million in 2014, and were available in more than 4,000 retail outlets including Whole Foods Market and A&P.[21] As of May 2019, annual sales hit $74 million, and their products were also available in retailer chains like Albertsons, Safeway, Shoprite, Sprouts, among others.[22][23]

Recognition in the media[edit]

The company's primary products, Enlightened Ice Cream and Bada Bean Snacks, have been listed by a number of registered dietitians and nutritionists as items that they personally purchase, recommend, and eat[24][25][26]. The company has also received a number of favorable reviews, ratings, and rankings in lists comparing it to other food products in similar categories from prominent media outlets and nutritionists.[27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][promotional source?]

In 2017, Shoretz was listed in Forbes annual "30 under 30" lists in the Food and Drink category.[35]

In 2019, Prevention listened "Enlightened Monkey Business Dairy Free Ice Cream" as #2 on its list of "10 Best Dairy-Free Ice Creams for a Healthier Dessert, According to Dietitians"[36]. Later that month, Enlightened was listed at #5 in a list of "The Best Healthy Ice Creams You Can Buy" on Shape.com.[37]

"Non-dairy is one thing, but this ice cream is also lower in sugar and calories than most other varieties, making it a good fit for many diets," stated dietician Erin Palinski-Wade (author of Belly Fat for Dummies) in regards to the Monkey Business flavor of ice cream.[36]

In 2020, the Enlightened's Triple Shot Espresso Ice Cream flavor was listed as #3 by Women's Health of "14 Sugar-Free Ice Creams That Are Actually Worth Eating, According To Nutritionists".[38]

Legal controversy[edit]

In January 2019, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Beyond Better Foods for allegedly misleadingly marketing its Enlightened Ice Cream as ice cream. According to the suit, the company replaces the milk fat in the products with a fat derived from vegetables, which was in direct violation of federal regulations that require dairy to be the primary ingredient.[39][40]
