Big Rod (he/him) is a professional drag king and Australian LGBTQIA+ figure. Out of drag, he goes by Laura Hart and uses she/they pronouns. He avocates for drag kings' significance and joy to be recognised in the queer arts scene. Within the drag king community, He strives for representation of all performance mediums and showcasing intersectionality and diverse casting.
Career[edit]
Big Rod started his career as a drag king in 2016. He founded and host "The Kings" – one of Australia’s biggest drag king shows since July 2020.[1]
They have performed at events such as Queerstories (Riverside Theatre), Crips & Creeps (Various), Big Thick Energy (Darlinghurst Theatre) Summer Blow Out (Comedy Republic Melbourne), FROTH (Rainbow House Melbourne), Kings (Newcastle) and A Streetcar Named Hot Tin Menagerie (New Theatre). They have been featured on outlets such as ABC TV, ABC Queer, The Audrey Journal, TimeOut Sydney, FBi Radio & JOY FM.[2][1]
They worked as the Improvisation and Casting Director on Limitless with Chris Hemsworth (Disney+ and Nat Geo).
Laura was a member of the first ITS all-women improv troupe Confetti Gun and toured to New York to perform in the shows Queer, Far, Wherever You Are and Confetti Gun.[1]
In August 2022, they exhibited at Drag Expo and led and curated a panel discussion 'A Kingdom Kiki'.
They also produced and host a fortnightly show 'Cabaret King' at Meraki Arts Bar.

Hart was born in Sydney. They went to school in the Sutherland Shire.
They hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Charles Sturt University with a major in Theatre, and have trained in improv at ITS, Impro Australia and UCB.[1]
Hart is a lesbian. They live with their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Cloudy.
Awards[edit]
Hart are a 2020 Covid Response Grant Recipient and 2017 Young Social Pioneer with the Foundation for Young Australians – developing and sharing their improv comedy program for people with anxiety.[3]
In Hart won the Arts & Entertainment Award from ACON's Honour Awards in August 2022.[4]
