Gustavo Rafael Guerrero Soto (Cumaná, Venezuela, October 19, 1996), better known by his stage name Big Soto, is a Venezuelan singer and songwriter of the urban genre. His interest in trap music turned him into one of the first singers of the genre in Venezuela, with over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify.[1]

Early life[edit]

Soto was born in Cumana, Sucre, Venezuela, but lived part of his childhood in a smalltown called Mariguitar. When he was 9 years old, he moved with his family to Valles Del Tuy, a city near to the Venezuelan Capital, Caracas. His stage name is a homage to his mothers’ family, the Soto's, who, besides being musicians, supported and gave him wings to pursue his artistic career.[2] At first, his stage name was going to be simply “Soto”, but influenced by the rappers' movement who added words like “Little” “Lil” or “Big” to their names, he decided to add “Big” to his and choose definitely “Big Soto” as his stage name.[2]

Soto has great devotion for Hip Hop, rap, trap, R&B and African American music in general. Some artists that have shaped his growth as an artist are Gorillaz, Slipknot, System of Down, and the Brazilian band Angra. He decided to stay in the trap genre the moment he started listening to Young Thug, A$AP Rocky, The Underachievers, Migos and Flatbush Zombies.[3] Since the beginning of his career he demonstrated a great interest in understanding the behind the scenes of the music business process, learning about programming, sampling, mixing and music construction.[4][5]

Musical career[edit]

His first rhymes began in rappers street-style battles in 2013. When Soto started his musical career, he traveled from Valles del Tuy to Caracas to record his singles in small home-based studios. When he met the rapper Trainer, they partnered in the project called “Eleucer Music”, a creative group which they left little time after to continue working as solo singers. Right after Eleucer Music, he joined OBG, a project that pushed him into the national trap spectrum. OBG was a collective group created by Akapellah with the goal of giving young and new rappers a push in the national scene.[2]

In 2013, Soto started his audiovisual sciences studies at IUTIRLA. At the same time, he organized local rappers events. At 20 years old and after a couple of years of street free-style rapping, he decided to fully dedicate to music and quit his collage studies. Big Soto's first song was Exposicion in 2014 but the first one to put him in the national music scene was Chamito Loco, featuring Trainer. In 2016, he met Micro TDH, another Venezuelan singer. They share great interest in similar musical styles and have songs together like Ponte and Caderas.[6][7]

Big Soto also shares a musical relationship with the rapper Neutro Shorty, which started in 2018 when they met performing at a show. Their joint album, Apokalypsis, is composed of eight songs accompanied by a video each. In 2018, he added to his catalog songs like Aquella Noche, Perdon Mama, Me Niego Ft. Mora, Verdad and Grosero.[8][9]

In 2019, he moved to the Dominican Republic to continue working in his musical career, and shortly after moved again to Mexico City with the intention of boosting his career by the hand of Rimas Music.[10] Big Soto's career has been specially pushed by his social media, being YouTube and SoundCloud the first ones where the singer started to share his work.[11][12] Additional to the great push social media gave him, he has done several collaborations with other artists like Trainer, Corina Smith, Micro TDH, Neutro Shorty, Mora,[13] Akapellah, De La Ghetto, Álvaro Díaz, Khea, Randy Nota Loca, Sharlene,[14] Bizarrap, among others.[15][16]
