Early life and family[edit]

Bigna Freiin von Wyttenbach was born in Bern on 18 August 1930 to Baron Thomas Albrecht von Wyttenbach and Marguerite Luise Imhof.[1] Her family were part of the Swiss nobility, and she was a descendent of the Protestant reformer Thomas Wyttenbach.[2] Her paternal grandparents were Baron Hans Konrad Albrecht Karl von Wyttenbach and Eleonore Elva Yolanta de Vigneulle.[3] Her maternal grandfather, Othmar Imhof, was a surgeon who served as chief of staff at a hospital in Sumatra, Dutch East Indies.[4] Von Wyttenbach was the grandniece of Max Imhof, a wealthy plantation owner who served as the Swiss Consul in Sumatra, and of Carl Imhof, an engineer who participated in the construction of the Tauern Railway Tunnel and the Lötschberg Base Tunnel.[5] Von Wyttenbach's maternal great-grandfather, Walter Bion, was a Swiss Reformed pastor at the Predigerkirche Zürich.[6]

She had two brothers, Peter and Xandi, and a half brother, Danilo, from her mother's remarriage after the death of her father. Von Wyttenbach grew up in Lurate Caccivio, near Como, Italy, on her parents' estate La Benedetta, originally a fifteenth-century Benedictine monastery. Von Wyttenbach was educated at Scuola Svizzera di Milano and obtained a diploma from Pittman's College in London.

Career[edit]

Von Wyttenbach was a writer, authoring a historical account of her childhood in 2004 titled Swiss Aristocrats and the Second World War.[7] She also wrote three children's books: Coronets, Butterflies, and Roses, Rocky, My Friend, and Mr. White Pinhead: Goes to Switzerland.

She was an international real estate broker and spokesperson.[1] She also owned several small businesses and worked as a language tutor.[1] She taught French, Italian, German, and English and worked as a substitute teacher at Pleasantville High School. In 1973, von Wyttenbach became a licensed real estate agent. In 1977, she obtained a New York State real estate broker's licenses and opened her own office in Pleasantville, New York. She was the owner and president of three real estate corporations, including one international company. Von Wyttenbach was a member of FIABCI, the International Real Estate Federation, in Paris.

Personal life[edit]

In 1959, von Wyttenbach came to the United States to visit her cousins. While on her visit, she met John E. Francis, a doctor, and they married on 25 July 1959 in Washington, D.C.[1] They had three children: Peter, Robert, and Patricia.[1]

She was fluent in seven languages including German, Swiss German, French, Italian, and English.[1]

She died on 25 July 2021 in Gainesville, Florida.[1]
