Bilal Hashmat (born 1969) is a Pakistani-American IT engineer and researcher, working primarily in the electronic health record (EHR) industry. Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Hashmat studied economics at City University of New York between 1988 and 1992. Hashmat worked with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to develop usability guidelines for patient safety, later adopted by the American Medical Informatics Association.[1][2]

In 1997 Hashmat and his brother Kamal founded CureMD, one of the first cloud-based EHR systems to be adopted by medical professionals in the United States.[3][4] Although the company is US based, about 30 percent of the product development takes place in Pakistan.[5] Hashmat became CEO on February 19, 2014 after Kamal died in a car accident.[6][7]

Awards and honors[edit]

Hashmat is an honorary member of the AMIA. He was the recipient of the NCR IT Excellence Award in 2007.[8] He received the P@SHA ICT Award in 2010[9] and 2012[10] for e-health applications.
