Background and Composition[edit]
Upon hearing a beat sent by Harle, Polachek recalled she "heard a melody out of nowhere, oceanic and potent, and started jotting down psychedelic images: a headless angel, an overflowing cup, a pearl inside an oyster". The beat and the images became the song “Billions.”
Music Video[edit]
A music video directed by Polachek and Matt Copson was released on February 10, 2022. It features Polachek indulging in several activities - picking grapes and crushing them with her feet, bathing, pouring wine and reading a book to a group of children.
Critical Reception[edit]
Upon release, the song was met with widespread critical acclaim. Pitchfork called the song "a lucent pathway towards a new era for the pop auteur" and awarded the song "Best New Track".[1]. Kat Bouza of Rolling Stone called the song "a trip-hop inspired, hallucinogenic epic".[2]The song was named the 11th best song of 2022 so far by Paste Magazine.[3]
