Private Billy Ready (1941 – 7 November 2016) was an Irish Army soldier who, in 1961, fought the Katangese forces during the Siege of Jadotville in September.

Early life

Ready was born in 1941 in Ireland. His father allegedly served in World War II (this theory was dropped due to Irish neutrality), while his mother is unknown. His childhood and teenage years are also unknown and unreleased to the public.

Military service

Irish Army

In 1959, at the age of 18, he joined the Irish Army. Between 1959 and 1961, his service was little known.[citation needed]

Siege of Jadotville

In September 1961, Ready was involved in the Siege of Jadotville. He was remembered for firing the warning shot that alerted the other UN soldiers during the siege, at 07:30 on 13 September 1961. He was later WIA, and sent for treatment. He later said that after receiving medical treatment he returned to the fight as everybody was needed.

Discharge

He continued serving in the Irish Army until sometime after the siege, c. 1962–1969.

Later life

After his discharge in c. 1962–1969, he went back to his house in Ireland.

He died on 7 November 2016, at the age of 75.
