Billy Starr (born 1951) is the founder and executive director of the Pan-Mass Challenge, a fundraising event for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.[5] Since its founding in 1980, the Challenge has raised more money than any other single athletic fundraiser in the country,[6] a total of $717 million through 2019.[7]

Starr created the Pan-Mass Challenge in 1980, several years after his mother contracted melanoma[5] and passed away at age 49.[2][8] The following year, he began working full-time to make it into an annual event.[4]

Starr has received some criticism for his salary, which in 2014 exceeded $500,000.[4] Starr's salary and other overhead costs are funded by sponsorship, registration fees, and other income, rather than the money raised by riders.[9]

Starr has been credited with being a leader in the development of the "a-thon" fundraising model of sponsored athletic events.[4] He has served as a consultant on other fundraising efforts,[10] including Pelotonia in Columbus, Ohio;[11] the Dolphins Cycling Challenge in Miami; and the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.[4]
