History

BioSapien was founded in 2018 by Khatija Ali in New York City. The company was initially focused on developing methods to improve localized cancer treatment. In its early development phase, BioSapien secured US$250,000 in pre-seed funding from private investors and accelerator programs, including RebelBio, backed by SOSV.[3]

In November 2021, BioSapien completed a seed funding round led by SOSV. Co-investors in the round included Hikma Ventures (subsidiary of Hikma Pharmaceuticals), Microventures, Infinity Capital Ventures, JPIN VCATS, and Side Door Ventures. The company raised US$2.1 million.[4][5]

In December 2021, BioSapien announced a partnership agreement with Vosfox Medical.[6]

In October 2023, BioSapien joined Hub71, a technology ecosystem based in Abu Dhabi, which was launched in 2019 by the government of the United Arab Emirates.[7]

In December 2024, BioSapien raised US$7 million[8][9] in a funding round led by Global Ventures, Golden Gates Ventures, and Dara Holdings.[10][11]

Products

BioSapien's main product is MediChip, a 3D-printed drug delivery device developed for localized chemotherapy.[1] The platform is designed to be implanted near tumor sites, enabling controlled and sustained release of therapeutic agents with the aim of reducing systemic exposure and related side effects. The technology uses customizable 3D bioprinting techniques to tailor treatment to individual patient needs.[1]

In addition to MediChip, the company holds several patents related to biomaterial-based drug delivery and tissue engineering. These include drug-eluting surgical materials and bioengineered constructs intended for use in vascular grafts and regenerative medicine. The patented technologies are designed to allow for precise drug diffusion and localized therapeutic application.[12]

Awards and recognition

In 2020, BioSapien's founder and CEO was included in a list of leading executives in the biotechnology sector.[13] In 2024, the company received recognition at the Make it in the Emirates startup pitch competition in the category of additive manufacturing for 3D printing.[14][15][16] That same year, BioSapien was acknowledged in a biotechnology leadership award program.[17]
