BlackManWhiteBaby is a contemporary artist working in photography and video. Their self-portraits focus on themes surrounding race, gender identity, childhood trauma, and American culture.

Career[edit]

In 2018, BlackManWhiteBaby's solo exhibition entitled "American Traditions"[1][2][3] included a video installation, spoken word, and a music set by Canadian DJ A-Trak. The show presented a hint of Southern hospitality while simultaneously showing the relationship between slavery and commerce that still exists today. Guests were served fried chicken and biscuits by white-gloved black men dressed as Uncle Ben's. One room of the gallery was transformed into a chat circle by a group of actors telling the stories of real people who were unarmed and killed by a police officer. One of the actors was a former college roommate of Sandra Bland.

BlackManWhiteBaby's work has been featured on the Fox television series Empire (2015 TV series).[4] Collectors of their work include singer-songwriter Lady Gaga and film producer-director Lee Daniels.

In 2019, BlackManWhiteBaby was a guest speaker at California State University, Northridge. Queer identity, art process, paradigms of masculinity, and artists of color exhibiting their work in "mainstream" spaces were among topics discussed.[5]
