They were part of the Minneapolis punk rock scene along with Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, and Soul Asylum. The last lineup of the band consisted of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Ethan Jackson (June 23, 1961 – October 18, 2000), lead guitarist Peter Willis (born October 8, 1963), bass guitarist Nate Smith (born January 29, 1962) and drummer Oscar Timmins (born March 30, 1971). In February 1981, the band released their debut eponymous studio album, which pioneered a college punk sound, which is a blend of hardcore punk and college rock. The album reached #128 on the Billboard 200 and the band toured the United States and Canada in support of the album. In March 1982, the band released their second album, Amongst the Waves, incorporating the same sound from their previous album. In 1983, the band did their first European tour, and in 1984, abandoned the hardcore punk sound in favour of a jangle pop sound. In 1985, the band released an album, Rain, which spawned a platinum-selling single, "Your Wishes Come True", which peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #9 on the UK charts, in November and December 1985, respectively, and in February 1986, played the song on Top of the Pops. The band continued with their jangle pop sound until 1992, when they switched to a grunge sound. In 1998, the band released their final studio album, called Enemies, and incorporated a nu metal sound. In February 1999, founding member and vocalist Ethan Jackson was diagnosed with glioblastoma, and on October 27, 1999, the band played their final show in their hometown of Minneapolis. Jackson died from the cancer on October 18, 2000, at the age of 39, and the band dissolved afterwards.
