"Black Pearl" is a K-Pop/Mandopop song of electronic-dubstep genre performed by South Korean-Chinese boy bands Exo-K and Exo-M. Available in both Korean and Mandarin Chinese, the song was included in their first studio album XOXO which was digitally released on June 3, 2013 under the record label of S.M. Entertainment.[1]
Composition[edit]
"Black Pearl", according to Korean music site Naver, has an aggressive sound of the stringed instruments combined with dubstep.[2]
The song has been composed by a team of music producers which include 2xxx!, Hyuk Shin, DK, Deanfluenza, Jasmine Kearse, Brittani White and JJ Evans. Hyuk Shin and DK had previously collaborated with S.M. Entertainment by composing Exo's "Angel" and "Don't Go", and Shinee's "Dream Girl".[3] Hyuk Shin also worked with Jasmine Kearse and Brittani White on Fiestar's hit single "We Don't Stop".[4] Arrangement of "Black Pearl" was handled by Hyuk Shin and 2xxx!.
The lyrics of the Korean version of the song were penned by songwriter Seo Ji-eum who had also contributed her skills in writing lines for Girls' Generation-TTS's "Twinkle" and f(x)'s "Electric Shock".[5] The English lyrics for the rap were provided by the Jam Factory.[2] Liu Yuan wrote the Chinese version of the song as well as for three other tracks on the album. The lyrics speak of a 'relationship and the struggles a man endures because of his love'.
Release[edit]
The 'developmental' track was produced and recorded somewhere in 2011 before Exo's official debut into entertainment industry but never made it into their first EP Mama. The instrumental version of "Black Pearl" was used as the accompanying music for eighth debut teaser video featuring an appearance by Exo member Sehun. The video was uploaded on S.M. Entertainment's official YouTube channel on January 11, 2012.[6]
The song was ultimately released as the third track on Exo's first studio album XOXO which was released on June 3, 2013.[2] The song was also the first track to be used for the drama version of the music video of "Wolf" which was uploaded on SM Town's YouTube channel on July 15, 2013.[7]
Reception[edit]
"Black Pearl" gained generally favorable reviews form K-pop critics. The popular K-pop news site Allkpop regarded "Black Pearl" and "Heart Attack" from the album as particularly interesting saying that "they are dark ballads that really mesh well with and expand upon Exo's mythical motif".[8] Seoulbeats was also pleased with the track pointing out that it is well-paced and made a 'nice' transition from "Baby, Don't Cry". The reviewer praised the piece for its tight production and upbeat chorus with slower verses.[9] K-pop critic McRoth remarked the track as spellbinding and the strongest on XOXO.[10]

The song was also included in the set-list of f(x) and Exo's special winter festival joint concert SM Town Week: "Christmas Wonderland", on December 23 and 24, 2013 at KINTEX in Goyang.[11]
