Blaise Thompson (born 23 October 1954) is an English painter, illustrator and lecturer.

Early Life[edit]

Blaise Thompson was born in London in 1954, the eldest of four children born to Philip and June. His father Philip was a prolific artist, designer and teacher, considered a "visual polymath".[1] Thompson and his siblings attended Holland Park School in London.

Career[edit]

Thompson began his career working for renowned British graphic designer Derek Birdsall at design group Omnific, before completing a BA in Painting at Sheffield Polytechnic. He later studied Illustration at the Royal College of Art under the tutelage of Quentin Blake.[2]

After graduating, Thompson worked for twelve years as a member of the illustration studio collective Big Orange, which later became Heart Agency.[3] Thompson would go on to lecture in illustration at various colleges and universities including Camberwell, Harrow, Brighton, and Cambridge Anglia Ruskin.[4]

Thompson is known for his bold, graphic paintings which incorporate collage, heavy texture and bespoke stencils, employing a range of techniques and materials.[5] His work draws from his varied background of art disciplines, from graphic design and publishing to printmaking and fine art.

In 1997, Thompson was commissioned to produce the cover artwork for the Jesus Jones album Already. Thompson also created the artwork for the singles "The Next Big Thing", and "Chemical #1", and later for the band's demo compilation release "Already Demos".[6]

Thompson exhibited a series of paintings and prints in 2018 entitled Maroc Memories,[7] inspired by his travels in Morrocco with a group of six other artists.[8]

Clients of Thompson's have included Penguin Books, The Economist, John Lewis, Adidas, Virago Press, and Ambit Magazine, as well as numerous book covers for authors including Joseph Heller and Susie Boyt.[9]
