Biography
Emmett James is the son of Richard and Kathryn Humphries. His father was a music journalist for Fleet Street during the 1960s and a founding member of the folk-rock band The Appalachians.[citation needed] James has two brothers, Cymon and Matthew, and three sisters: Amy, Georgina, and Lucy.[citation needed] He was named after Emmett Ryker, a character from the 1960s Western television series The Virginian.[citation needed]
James received his education at Cypress Junior School and Sylvan High School in South London. He went on to study acting in London under Marianna Hill at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. His career as a performer includes television soap operas, stage productions and voiceover work.[citation needed]
He received an ADA Award[when?] for his lead stage performance as Tom in Keeping Tom Nice.[citation needed] A review in Backstage West stated: "James turns in an astonishing performance in the role of the profoundly damaged Tom, we never get the sense that he's acting up there."[citation needed]
He wrote a memoir, Admit One: My Life in Film.[citation needed]
James's artwork has been collected by Kevin Spacey, among others, and has been featured on album covers for Simple Minds and Kylie Minogue and posters for The Haunting of Hill House, 13 Reasons Why and Project Runway.[citation needed]
