Blanca Rosa Blanco Azcuy (Spanish: [b-lahn-kah rho-sah b-lahn-koh]; born 24 February 1972)[2] is a Cuban-Italian actress, model, writer, and director. She made her acting debut at 19 in the Cuban telenovela Las Honradas. Her role of Chief Monica in crime drama series Tras la Huella achieved national popular recognition, which led Blanco to receive the Most Popular Actress of Cuba award for 10 consecutive years.[3] Her subsequent roles in films Paginas del diario de Mauricio (2006), Lisanka (2009), and Habanastation (2011), gave Blanca Rosa several recognition, including an ACE Award for Best Supporting Actress by the Association of Latin Entertainment Critics in New York.[4]

She has also appeared in films of different genres, including the biographical To the Victory at Last (1997), the comedy El Premio Flaco (2009), the animated film Chico & Rita (2010), the musical Irremediablemente Juntos (2011), and the horror Juan of the Dead (2012).[5]

In 2017, Blanca Rosa started working on her first film, El Regreso, which she directed it, wrote it, and starred on it. It makes the first woman in Cuba to do these three roles in a feature length film.[6][7]

Early life[edit]

Blanco was born in the working class town of Marianao, in Havana, Cuba, to Berta Azcuy, a statistician in a cultural center, and Enrique Blanco, manager in hotel facilities. She has two siblings, Orquidia, a lawyer, and Adrian, a film editor and photographer. Since very young, she participated in poetry readings and small theatre plays in cultural centers. She always knew she wanted to become an actress.[8]

At age 18, she auditioned for the Department of Performing Arts at The University of Arts of Cuba, the only higher education institution dedicated to the performing arts in Cuba. She competed against 1200 other students and was among the 20 students selected for admissions.

Acting career[edit]

Early work, 1990–1998[edit]

While in college, she was cast in several theatre plays under the direction of professors and theatre directors such as Vicente Revuelta, José Antonio Rodríguez and Roberto Blanco. From La Historia de un Antiguo Encanto, Los Invitados del Rey, Ubu Rey, El Perro del Ortelano, to classic theatre as Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. These were just some of the plays that consolidated her training as an actress. Later with theatre group Buscón, she joined the cast of Cuentos de Amor, Humor y Muerte and La Historia de un Escaparate.[2]

She participated in theatre workshops given by Eugenio Barba, as well as the "Elsinor" festivals that took place at the The University of Arts of Cuba (ISA). During this period, she published theatre scripts, stories, and poems as a collaborator in the magazine Albur.[2]

Once graduated from ISA, she joined the theater group "Irrumpe", directed by Roberto Blanco. After 5 years, the experience she acquired with this company meant an important starting point for her future work in other medium such as television and film.[9]

Breakthrough acting, 2001–2016[edit]

After her extensive career in theatre, she began working on television in soap operas, crime drama television series, adventures, festival presentations and musical events. She also worked in comedic miniseries and other genres. Her most popular role was his character of Chief Monica in crime drama series "Tras la Huella." Eventually, she hosted TV show "Ecos de Mujer", Lucas award ceremonies and the Cubadisco Festival. Later, she starred in several Cuban films such as "Páginas del Diario de Mauricio", a film directed by Manuel Pérez Paredes, the adaptation film "El Premio Flaco" made by Cuban filmmaker Juan Carlos Cremata, in "Habanastation" by Ian Padrón, "Lisanka" by Daniel Diaz Torres, and "Juan de los Muertos", directed by Alejandro Brugués, among others.[10]

She has taught acting courses at ISA, and worked as a model for photographer Roberto Salas.
