Blinkenshell
Blinkenshell is a virtual community built around a public access UNIX shell account provider. Blinkenshell was founded in 2006 and has been in continual operation since. The name Blinkenshell refers to Blinkenlights.[1] [2]
History
The domain name blinkenshell.org was registered in 2006[3] and a Linux server [4] [5] was set up for public access. Shell accounts could be registered using a semi-automated process and new members were accepted using a peer-review system. [6]. At this point Blinkenshell was part of a larger network of shell providers called Shellsnet (now defunct).[7]. Since 2010 Blinkenshell operates its own IRC network called BlinkenIRC for users to chat. [8]
Since users are allowed to log in and execute their own code, the server is susceptible to both local and remote exploits; therefore, many different RBAC systems like grsecurity, SELinux and Apparmor have been used over the years to minimize attack vectors.[9] [10]
