Bob Briton (born 1955) is the founder and Secretary General of the Australian Communist Party. Bob Briton has been an advocate and activist for workers and oppressed people all across the world since joining the Communist Party of Australia in 1979.
Early life
Briton was born in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory in 1955.[1] Briton received a strict catholic education.[1] He was the youngest member of his union to receive a service award for his leadership of a campaign, including strikes and pickets, to remove the asbestos from the roof space of his workplace, the National Library of Australia.[1]
Political career
Communist Party of Australia
Briton was a member of the Communist Party of Australia, formerly the Socialist Party of Australia, after joining in 1984 from the Communist Party of Australia.[1]
Briton was appointed acting Secretary General of the Communist Party on 5 June 2013 after the resignation of then Secretary General Hannah Middleton.[2] Briton remained acting Secretary General until 6 October 2013 when he was re-elected alongside the President Vinnie Molina.[3]
On 21 March 2019, Briton resigned as Secretary General of the Communist Party of Australia because of the direction the party was going, the young people within the party, and to create a new party.[1][4]
Australian Communist Party
Briton, upon resigning from the Communist Party, founded and led the Australian Communist Party on 28 June 2019. A bio of Briton on his party’s website states: "In his last term as General Secretary, Bob encountered greater resistance to change including to the innovative work of the youth. With other former members of the party, he drew the conclusion that the party had lost its way and been overtaken by various opportunist trends. He decided that the time had come to found a new party without the ingrained, ill-disciplined habits of the old party. That party is the Australian Communist Party."[1]
