Bob Cruz

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bob Cruz (born March 19, 1952, died February 19, 1995) was an American disc jockey and announcer who grew up in Levittown, New York. A weekend announcer at WLCY in Tampa, Florida, where he went by the name of Bob Morgan, Cruz was hired in 1976 to replace Jay Reynolds at WABC (AM) radio. As such, he was the last DJ hired at what was the number-one top-40's radio station in North America.[1] He ultimately replaced Dan Ingram — "the most widely listened-to DJ in America" and "the greatest afternoon drive jock ever" — in the high revenue-generating timeslot of afternoon-drive.[2][3][4]

Besides presenting the 'all night show' on WABC, he became the permanent replacement for Dan Ingram when the latter was not available, possibly because his voice resembled that of Ingram. Cruz later took over afternoons in 1979 when Ingram moved to morning drive. He left WABC in March of 1981, but remained in New York for a time as the on-air announcer for the ABC television program 20/20, as well as ABC television's coverage of the Olympics, and scores of national commercials.[5][6] He also had a part in the 1987 film Making Mr. Right.[7]

His resignation from WABC in 1981 continued a string of departures at the station, triggered by a drop in ratings that precipitated the change to an all-talk format.[8] Cruz was a casualty of AIDS in 1995, by which time 500,000 cases had been reported in the U.S.[9] Upon his death, ABC's 20/20 did a special tribute to him.
