Bobby Balachandran is an Indian-American film producer and technology entrepreneur. He is the founder of BTG Universal, a Tamil-language film production banner, and separately the founder, president, and chief executive officer of Exterro, Inc., a legal governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) software company headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon, United States.[1][2]

Early life and education

Bobby Balachandran was born into a Tamil family in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.[3] He holds a bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from the Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, and a Master of Science in computer science from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.[4]

Career

Film production: BTG Universal

Bobby Balachandran founded BTG Universal, a Chennai-based production and distribution company, and entered the Tamil film industry as a producer in late 2023.[5] Speaking to South First about the move, he said he viewed the entertainment industry as ripe for the kind of process automation and operational transparency he had already applied in legal technology.[6]

His debut production, Demonte Colony 2 (also marketed as Demonte Colony II: Vengeance of the Unholy), a supernatural horror thriller directed by R. Ajay Gnanamuthu and starring Arulnithi and Priya Bhavani Shankar, was produced by Balachandran alongside Vijay Subramaniam and R. C. Rajkumar.[7] The film released theatrically on 15 August 2024 and grossed an estimated ₹85 crore, one of the higher-grossing Tamil films of the year.[8]

He next produced Chennai City Gangsters (2025), a comedy heist film directed by Vikram Rajeshwar and Arun Keshav, starring Vaibhav, Athulya Ravi, and Manikandan Rajesh, with music by D. Imman. The film's motion poster was released ahead of its launch,[9] followed by its teaser.[10] In an interview with DT Next during the film's launch, director Vikram Rajeshwar described it as a comic caper built around a heist plot.[11] The film, produced solely by Balachandran under BTG Universal, released on 20 June 2025.[11]

Balachandran also produced Retta Thala (2025), an action thriller directed by Kris Thirukumaran in which Arun Vijay played a dual role, with music composed by Sam CS. The Hindu reported the film went on floors in April 2024, describing it as Balachandran's third production venture under BTG Universal.[1] Production wrapped in mid-2024,[12] and the film's first look was unveiled that year.[13] The film was released on 25 December 2025.[14]

Exterro

Balachandran is also the founder, president, and chief executive officer of Exterro, Inc., which he founded in 2008.[3] The company builds a Legal GRC platform used by corporate legal, privacy, and IT teams for e-discovery, legal hold, and compliance workflows.[15]

In 2018, Exterro received a strategic investment from Leeds Equity Partners.[16] Exterro acquired digital forensics firm AccessData in December 2020,[17] and by 2022 the company had undergone a recapitalization valuing it at more than $1 billion, with Balachandran targeting a possible IPO as early as 2023.[2] In January 2023, the company acquired e-discovery firm Zapproved while delaying its IPO timeline.[18] In September 2024, CNBC-TV18 reported Exterro had registered a compound annual growth rate of about 30% and was exploring acquisitions in India.[19] In a 2021 interview on the legal-technology blog LawSites, Balachandran discussed the company's growth strategy and IPO plans.[20] He also appeared as a guest on Forbes India's Startup Fridays podcast, discussing entrepreneurship and decision-making under uncertainty.[21]

Bobby Balachandran was named to a "Top 10 Entrepreneurs to Watch" list by Industry Tech Outlook in 2021,[22] was named "LegalTech CEO of the Year" at the 2021 LegalTech Breakthrough Awards,[23] received a Gold Stevie Award for Achievement in Management in 2023,[24] and was named the Portland Business Journal's "Executive of the Year" that same year.[25]
