Leni Riefenstahl
Leni Riefenstahl was an interpretive dancer, actress, and director who had a remarkable career and she was born on August 22, 1902.1 While her abilities as an actress and director were held in high regards by most, her affiliation to the Nazi regime would prove to be her undoing.2 She had much success in multiple German movie pictures and also began directing.3 Adolf Hitler was a politician on the rise in Germany at the time and eventually convinces her to direct a film exalting the Nazi party.4 Riefenstahl’s ability to create imagery that could help persuade the ideology of people no doubt was as a valuable asset by Hitler. Films of by Riefenstahl include, Olympia, Tiefland, The Nuremberg, and The Nuba (Hinton).5 Riefenstahl’s most famous work is called Triumph of the Will.6 It is one of the best propaganda films ever made.4 She won many awards such as the Best Foreign Film at the acclaimed Venice Film Festival for her film work at the Olympics (Hinton).7 Although, praised for her films, her work with the Nazi party began to make her unfavorable to many. Neil Page author of Riefenstahl Screened asserts concerning Riefenstahl, “There are was a dearth of critical, scholarly volumes dealing with her work and persona” (Page).8 After Germany’s defeat in World War II Riefenstahl could not escape her public perception as a Nazi party member or sympathizer.6 Although, not an official member of the Nazi regime, Riefenstahl’s career would never be the same during the post war years.7 She lived to be 101 years old and died in 2003 (Pages).9
