Bobby Thompson (born December 1992) is an American professional strongman. Thompson is a four-time competitor at the World's Strongest Man and a two-time podium finisher at the Arnold Strongman Classic. In 2021, Thompson set a new American log lift record of 217.5 kg (480 lb).[1]
Early life
Bobby Thompson was born in 1992 in Germany. His military family eventually settled in the small town of Fredericksburg, Virginia.[2] His father was a cross-country runner.[1] By the time Thompson graduated from his Virginia high school, he stood 6-foot-1-inches tall and weighed a muscular 265 lbs (120 kg).[3]
Career
Strongman
Early in his career, Thompson acquired his nickname "The American Nightmare" after a post-contest conversation in Lithuania with Eastern European competitors. In the conversation, Thompson claimed to be "the best-looking American" his opponents were going to see. In response to this claim, one of the competitors replied Thompson was "The American Nightmare" he never wanted to see again. This acknowledgement solidified Thompson as a genuine threat to his opponents' chances of winning future contests and established Thompson's reputation with a name future fans would identify him as.[2]
Thompson placed 3rd in his debut at the 2018 Official Strongman Games. The following year, Thompson captured his first victory at the 2019 Arnold Amateur Strongman World Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Two years later, Thompson placed 1st at the 2021 Mammoth Strength Challenge held in Bowling Green, Kentucky.[4] In 2021, Thompson gained further accolades when he broke Rob Kearney's American log lift record, lifting 217.5 kg (480 lb).[1] The following year, Thompson went on to win the 2022 Beerstone strength event.[4] Nine months later, Thompson won the 2022 America's Strongest Man event, defeating 2nd and 3rd place finalists Tyler Cotton and Trey Mitchell.[5] Also in 2022, Thompson placed 3rd in the Arnold Strongman Classic and 6th in the Rogue Invitational.
