Bold Earth Teen Adventures is a tour company based in Colorado that offers summer adventure programs for middle and high school teens. Bold Earth offers trips to a variety of locations around the world.[1]

History[edit]

The company was founded by Abbott Wallis, who initially began leading small group tours himself in 1976. Bold Earth now hosts over 1,000 teen travelers over several continents.[2] Today, trips are offered in the U.S., Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Accreditation[edit]

Bold Earth is accredited by the American Camp Association.[3] Trip leaders are certified in levels of Wilderness First Responder, CPR and Lifeguard training.[4] Those certified in levels of Wilderness First Responder training are knowledgeable about medical training in remote areas and can manage medical issues in extreme environments.[5] Bold Earth tour guides are also screened prior to being placed in charge of tour groups.[6]

Tours[edit]

Tour groups vary in size and according to activity type.[7] Community service is a part of all of the trips and campers receive a certificate for their service.[8]

Controversy[edit]

Bold Earth was scrutinized in 2012 when two of its tour group members were swept out to sea while hiking in a tide pool area in Hawaii. One boy was rescued, while the other was never recovered.[9] It was later discovered that the kayak company subcontracted by Bold Earth and leading the excursion was outside the bounds of their permit when the accident occurred,.[10] The parents of the missing teen also said that the main tour leader had previously been charged with drug use, although there was no evidence that drugs were involved in the incident.[11]
