Bomberman B-Daman is a game released by Hudson Soft for the Super Famicom on December 20, 1996. It is the sixth installment in the Bomberman series for the Super Famicom.

Overview

This is the first game based on B-Daman. It features various modes such as Normal Mode, Duel Mode, and Battle Mode. The game system used in this game would later be adopted in the Game Boy game Super B-Daman: Fighting Phoenix and the Super Famicom game Bakkyuu Renpatsu!! Super B-Daman. An original B-Daman figurine and marble of the Bomberman character was included in the package.

Gameplay

Normal

The rules of Normal Mode are simple: explode the bombs in the stage with a single B-Daman shot. There are 10 levels in total, with each level consisting of 10 stages for a total of 100 stages. The player can choose which level to play, and the overall score (100 points × 10 stages = up to 1000 points) obtained by playing 10 consecutive stages determines the performance for that level. The game has three data files for saving progress.

The score for playing a stage on the nth try is calculated as 100 - 10 × (number of bombs not destroyed) - 5 × (n-1) points. If no bombs are destroyed, the score is always 0. The number of tries can be set as an option, and if more than two tries are made, the best score is adopted. Also, if all the bombs are destroyed, the player advances to the next stage regardless of the number of tries.

There are stages that require changing the speed and trajectory of the B-Daman by using ricochets and traps within the stage. In particular, ricochets allow for launching B-Daman shots that curve to the left or right or shots with high speed, which are important actions.

The overall score in Normal Mode (1000 points × 10 levels = up to 10000 points) determines the rank. Achieving a high score will result in various benefits, such as a change in the title music.

Duel

This is a two-player mode where players compete against each other. The goal is to explode the opponent's bomb within a certain time limit. Various options such as the number of bombs, time limit, and stage selection are available.

Battle

This is a multiplayer mode that supports up to four players using the multi-tap accessory. Players compete against each other to explode the bombs and earn points. The player with the highest score at the end of the time limit wins.

My B-Daman

You can change the colours of the bodies, limbs (excluding White Bomber), and facial expressions of all five B-Daman except for White Bomber to create your own B-Daman. The B-Daman you create can also be used in other modes.

There are 14 colours for bodies and limbs, and 6 types of facial expressions, allowing for the creation of 1,176 different B-Daman (14 × 14 × 6).

Edit

You can create up to three original stages. You can choose from large, medium, or small bombs and set their speed to fast, normal, or slow to create straight movement patterns. You can place up to 8 bombs.

Bonus Modes

Special

Appears when you earn 8,500 points or more in Normal mode. You can play 10 stages selected from Normal mode by setting your favourite equipment. Scores are not saved.

Survival

Appears when you earn 9,000 points or more in Normal mode. You can play all 100 stages of Normal mode continuously from the beginning. The mode ends if you fail to achieve a perfect score.

????

Appears when you receive 100 judgments in Normal mode. The basic content is the same as Normal mode, but B-Daman speed is twice as fast as usual. Note that the score is recorded separately from Normal mode.

Reception

Bomberman B-Daman received mixed reviews from critics. While some praised its unique blend of the Bomberman and B-Daman series, others criticised the limited gameplay variety and lack of innovation compared to previous Bomberman games.

Despite the mixed reception, Bomberman B-Daman gained a small but dedicated fan base and contributed to the popularity of the B-Daman franchise in the gaming community.
