The Bonfim Cemetery is a cemetery and the oldest active necropolis of Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais. It was inaugurated on February 8, 1897. It is one of the four public cemeteries in the city, and is located in the neighborhood with the same name. The architectural layout of the cemetery follows the geometric layout of the city. It consists of 54 blocks, divided between two main avenues and several secondary streets.[1]

The Bonfim cemetery has a variety of architectural tomb and mausoleum styles ranging from Belle Epoque to Art Deco and Brazilian modernism, mostly made by Italian and other European artisans, bearing some similarities to the Cemitério da Consolação in the neighboring state of São Paulo, and the Cemitério São João Batista in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the French Père Lachaise.

Some prominent people interred in the cemetery include:

Júlia Kubitschek ( The mother of Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek )

Roberto Batata ( association football forward who played for several Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Cruzeiro and for the Brazil national team )

Martim Francisco( association football coach, widely credited with the invention of the 4–2–4 formation )

Raul Soares ( Minister of the navy and then Governor of Minas Gerais from 1922 to 1924 when he passed due to cardiac illness )

Roberto Drummond( Writer and Journalist )

Olegário Maciel ( Governor of Minas Gerais and one of the main leaders of the 1930 revolution that put Getúlio Vargas in power )

Padre Eustáquio

Benedito Valadares ( Journalist, Governor of Minas Gerais from 1933 to 1945, Federal Deputy from 1946 to 1955 and Senator from 1955 to 1971 ).

The cemetery has a digitalized record of people buried.[2] The morgue building was listed in 1977 by the State Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage of Minas Gerais (IEPHA).[3]
