Bookselves is a digital social networking and book trading platform that enables users to physically meet, exchange books, and discuss their favorite authors, genres, and literary topics.[1] The startup is headquartered in Berkeley, CA and was founded in July, 2015 by a team of UC Berkeley, Harvard and IIT Kanpur alumni.[1]

Service[edit]

Bookselves is a free mobile app that requires registration to use.[2] The app service is provided via smartphone iOS platforms. Bookselves users can create profiles and add titles of physical books that they own and wish to trade. Users can search the app’s library database for books that belong to other users. All books that appear in the search belong to users in the same city. Bookselves encourages in-person meetings and discussions between users in public locations, such as bookstores, libraries, and parks.[3]

Mission[edit]

The goal of Bookselves is to “use the digital to enhance the real.”[1] Bookselves aims to expand the literary scene by helping readers open their book collections to their communities through the power of digital media. Once users are digitally connected, the app helps them exchange in-person meetups where they can exchange hard-copy books and discuss common literary interests.[4]

Bookselves aims to “bring like-minded readers together to help them engage in an intellectual or emotional conversation about books.”[2] Bookselves also endeavors to use the in-person exchanges of hard-copy books to revitalize and maintain the businesses of local bookstores, which have witnessed a decline in the purchase of physical books in the wake of e-books, purchasable from online vendors such as Amazon and Apple.[5][6]

History[edit]

Bookselves was founded July, 2015.[1] The beta version of the mobile app was launched November 17, 2015.[2]
