Boost Drinks Limited is a British drinks company that sells energy drinks, sports drinks, protein drinks and iced coffee. It sells them through convenience stores, independent retail chains and petrol forecourts.[2]

History[edit]

The company was founded on 27 June 2001 by Leeds Metropolitan University graduate Simon Gray at the age of 28 as a cheaper alternate to Red Bull.[3][4] It was originally known as Blast UK Limited before changing its name to Boost Drinks Limited on 12 July 2001.[1] Gray said in an interview that he wanted to take Boost to independent retailers because it would have been "crazy to challenge the big brands with a me-too product".[5] The brand was launched in Northern Ireland in 2003, with the Northern Irish market accounting for about 15 to 20 percent of the overall business.[6] By 2011, the company had launched in 12 countries and had also supplied its drinks to troops in Afghanistan.[2]

Adrian Hipkiss became the marketing director in late 2019, having previously held leadership positions at Tangerine Confectionery.[7] The price of Boost increased for the first time in 2020 and the packaging was changed.[8] In September of the same year, Boost unveiled their £1.2 million "Choose Now" campaign which focused on living in the moment, whilst juggling multiple jobs and hobbies at once.[3] In 2021, Boost Drinks signed an exclusive distribution deal with soft drinks brand Rio, with Boost Drinks now being in charge of the sales and marketing of Rio.[9] Boost Drinks became the official energy drinks partner of Leeds United for the 2021–22 Premier League season.[10]

Boost Retailer Hall of Fame[edit]

In June 2021, Boost introduced their "Boost Retailer Hall of Fame".[11] The winner is chosen by the people of Northern Ireland and receives a case of Boost Drinks and a stay at Fitzwilliam Hotel, Belfast.[12] The inaugural winner was Kearney’s in Randalstown which received 30% of the overall votes.[13][14]

Products[edit]

In 2010, the company attempted to introduce smoothies alongside Boost Energy, Boost Sport and Boost Active but the response was disappointing and it was soon abandoned.[5] In 2017, the logo and branding of Boost products was changed to give it a Boost a “more contemporary feel”.[15] Boost has unveiled a number of limited edition flavours including a plum, cloves and cinnamon flavour known as Winter Spice in 2015,[16] a tropical flavour known as Tropical Guango in 2016,[17] a pomegranate and blueberry flavour known as Pomberri Blast in 2017[18] and a grape and cherry flavour known as Cosmic Glow in 2018.[19] They also launched protein drinks in 2016[20] and an iced coffee range in 2020.[21]
